- I'm Pierce Presley
- Worked at daily newspapers, wire services and public television networks, along with several odd jobs
- Now working on master's degree through online program at University of Memphis
- Arkansawyer, former Marine, graduated from Loyola University New Orleans, wife, 2 kids, 2 dogs, 2 cats, 5 fish and a hamster
- The project
- Professional project and capstone course of master's degree
- Aims to give traditionally trained journalists new media skills
- Not necessarily about getting anyone hired, but that'd be great
- More about expanding one's horizons, becoming aware of what's possible

- I tried most of these last summer, with varying success
- along the way, found a lot of great resources, but spread all over

- it's all text and hyperlinks
- it's something I would have done when working at newspaper or AP
- Both are outstanding and link to solid learning resources

- Philosophy
- Even though I can glean a lot from reading, seeing something in action reaches more people
- Hearing about a subject helps others, especially in synthesizing information
- Reading is still important
- Links to outside resources are vital
- I don't fool myself into thinking that I can teach everyone everything
- I'm trying to introduce subjects with basic examples showing easy projects
- I will link to the best tutorials and discussions I can find
- Subjects
- We will cover the website itself and what goes into it in a section I call "Meta"
- We will cover the Internet, because it's the pipe through which new media flows
- We will cover text, in blogs, content management systems and documents
- We will cover audio, mostly through podcasting
- We will cover photo and video
- We will cover data, including how to get it and what to do with it
- And we will cover other topics including the business side, formal training, going mobile and the future of journalism
